In tropical areas from China, Asia, and Africa to the Caribbean and South America, bitter melon is both a food and a medicine. Unripe, its fruit resembles a warty, green cucumber that gradually turns orange with bright red edible seeds as it matures. Despite an exceedingly bitter taste, the fruits and sometimes the leaves are widely used in a variety of ethnic dishes. Bitter melon is a major constituent of the Okinawan diet and, some say, is key to the renowned longevity of the Japanese island people. Modern research has largely focused on its potential for treating diabetes.
How Bitter Melon Works
Although the human evidence is not yet strong, laboratory studies show that bitter melon has a hypoglycemic (blood glucose-lowering) action, and helps to control insulin levels. The constituents thought to be responsible for this action are charantin, plus alkaloids and peptides that mimic insulin. They may also trigger the production of a protein that encourages glucose uptake in the body.
In addition, charantin appears to stimulate the growth of pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system destroys beta cells; in other types of diabetes the functioning of beta cells is impaired.
Laboratory studies support other traditional uses of bitter melon, suggesting that different constituents have antiviral and antibacterial properties that might help to treat disorders including salmonella and E. coli infections, herpes and HIV viruses, malaria, and parasitic worms. An extract of bitter melon proteins is claimed to inhibit prostate tumor growth and a number of in vitro studies suggest it may have potential for combating other cancers and leukemia.
How to Use Bitter Melon
Traditionally bitter melon is taken as a fresh juice, decoction, or tincture. Concentrated fruit, seed, and whole herb extracts are also available as tablets, capsules, or powders. Follow label instructions or take as professionally prescribed.
Safety First
Take care if taking bitter melon with blood glucose–lowering medications as it can enhance their effect. It has a weak uterine stimulant activity so must not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Bitter melon should not be taken by people with glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) deficiency (a genetic condition most common in people from the Mediterranean and Middle East) due to a risk of hemolytic anemia.
Where to Find Bitter Melon
The fresh fruit is available in some supermarkets and Asian stores. Bitter melon supplements are available in health food stores or from a qualified herbalist.

The 29-year-old Shawna Fearn felt like a prisoner in her own body when she gained weight she battled to lose after her second son was born. If that was not enough, the doctor told Shawna that she was pre-diabetic and suffered from high blood pressure. Find out how this busy mom of two jump-started her battle to drop the kilos and live a healthier life.
How did you feel when you were overweight?
I felt totally disgusted with my appearance. I was depressed and ashamed about it and would even miss functions at my kids’ school or appointments with my friends because I hated the way I looked.I despised the oversized clothes I was wearing and felt uncomfortable all of the time. I had swollen feet on most days of the week and I also battled to walk short distances.
What did it take to get you on the path to transformation?
I felt depressed and decided to call a friend, who happened to be a personal trainer, Amanda Harry and asked for help. I then signed up for training sessions at Aspire Total Fitness in Happy Valley, Oregon.
How did you start your transformation?
I immediately started drinking more water and less soda. I also started to log my food every day to see what I was doing wrong and how I could fix it.
What type of training and/or diet did you follow as part of your transformation?
I followed a strength training split three times a week while also doing cardio for an hour four times a week. I also realised how weak my core was and started to practice planking every single day for a year. My first plank was over in 20 seconds but after a year I could plank for six minutes! My diet consisted of six to eight small meals a day. I focused on lean protein,vegetables and carbohydrates.I would drink half of my bodyweight in water.
Who helped you along the way, personally and/or professionally?
I received fantastic support from my family. My youngest son couldn’t wrap his arms around me when he gave me a hug. The other day he hugged me and his arms overlapped – I almost cried with joy! Amanda trained me and her guidance and support helped a lot. She was so patient with me, answered all my questions and held me accountable each and every day.
What was your motivation to achieve your goal?
My father battled with obesity and passed away at the young age of 43. I didn’t want to end up like him and that motivated me. I also wanted to lead a healthier life with my family.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge was not to train hard or follow the right eating plan but to keep believing that I was worth it in the end. I lacked the confidence but what inspired me was all the positive feedback and support I received from family, friends and even strangers on social media channels, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. When I took up the challenge I created social media pages to track and share my journey. My before and after photos motivated me and kept me on the right track.
How long did it take you to achieve your weight loss goal?
It took me a year to lose 52kg. I started at 43 percent body fat and set myself small goals of losing 5kg a month. I was measured every 4 weeks.
What did you learn from your transformation?
There is nothing so rewarding than being healthy and feeling energetic. It takes a lot of hard work but I have become a happier person who can now keep up with my children – I even go on bike rides with them! Every morning I plank and bang out some bodyweight squats before the day starts.
What message would you give to readers who might be in the same position as you were?
Don’t quit no matter how long it takes or what challenges you face. Just don’t quit. Take it day by day.
Since you have completed the transformation have you made further progress?
I help others who want to drop excess weight by giving them inspiration and holding them accountable to reach their goals.I am now working on toning and building muscle.I can also hold a 6-minute long plank!
Have you achieved anything else noteworthy since your transformation?
Soon I will be taking a test to be a certified personal trainer. I have been coaching ladies in my area to be healthier by following a strength training routine. We train outside which is fantastic!
What was the most difficult part of your transformation?
Finding the time to train and prepare meals.
How did the experience change your life?
I am now more active than ever and can keep up with my eight and 10-year-old boys. I am no longer ashamed of my body and I have met some amazing individuals who have motivated me to share my story with others who feel depressed about their weight problems. I have also inspired members of my own family to lose weight. My mother lost 32kg and my husband lost 23kg. I have the inner strength to overcome obstacles. I have come a long way from feeling depressed, being chubby and overeating on pizza and pasta. Mentally, I feel stronger, happier and more confident than ever before in my life!

The protocol puts a comprehensive lens on every urban regeneration decision, drives the delivery of meaningful performance outcomes, and sets the conditions for sustainable, collaborative impact.
“We call on visionary city makers and urban development leaders to disrupt the status quo by embracing our new model of urban regeneration,” says Bennett.
The protocol is structured around three core areas:

My husband, Shawn, and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our five children. It’s amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter, Kaytlin, called me to the porch. Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait—and looking all around our property for traces of a nest or a mother—we realized the tiny squirrel was likely an orphan.
Shaking terribly, he was frail, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife rehabilitators in our county. After some quick research, we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local Tractor Supply store for puppy formula and supplies was in order.
More extensive research taught us how much to feed him, how to estimate his age, how and when to wean him, and that we should release him as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I shared rotations of feeding “Squirt.” Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a syringe, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief, Squirt soon began to thrive. Within a few weeks he became more alert and active. He would chatter for his next meal, playfully crawl around on the girls, and curl up on them for a nap. It wasn’t long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were comical. Just like a child, he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety. Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
One day in the trees, he met up with a family of gray squirrels that was none too happy about his visit. They scolded and swatted at him, and he quickly learned some social skills. For several days he played all day in the trees surrounding our house but came down at bedtime.
And then one night, he didn’t. The rain pounded hard, and our girls fretted. But when the sun rose, there was Squirt, begging for a bite to eat. And that remained the pattern for a few weeks.
Squirt became well known in our neighborhood, and visitors knew to be on the lookout when they stopped by. But mostly he played in the trees, chattering away to anyone who happened to cross his path and occasionally swiping snacks from our toddler boys.
The experience was entertaining and heartwarming for our family. In the wild and somewhat silly moments of raising an orphaned baby squirrel, our children learned to value and appreciate life.

A camera is the ultimate summer accessory, but inclement weather can sometimes destroy your chances of the perfect shot! We don’t mean rain making your hair frizz or tan lines resulting in a less than picture-perfect appearance, we mean the effect weather can have on your equipment!
Humidity and condensation is a continuous concern for cameras, as a build-up of moisture behind the lens can quickly result in mold growth which is difficult to reverse and can easily destroy expensive equipment. At best, you will have a steamy, foggy camera lens that becomes useless until it’s completely dried out. However, it’s relatively simple to prevent.
Why Does Condensation Happen?
First of all, it’s important to understand how and why condensation happens. The key to this is Dew Point Temperature: the temperature at which humidity [water vapor in the air] will condense [become a visible liquid]. This can be found on most weather services and apps: here’s what it looks like on AccuWeather:
What this means is that to prevent any condensation forming, you need to keep your equipment consistently above the dew point temperature. That can be easier said than done. For example, stepping out from a cool air conditioned room into warm sunny environment, or vice versa – capturing photos of your ski trip outside in the snow and then taking your camera back into a warm, cozy lodge. Both of these examples result in a fast change in temperature affecting your equipment. The easiest thing to do to prevent this having any impact on your gear is to ensure it is always protected from the elements.
How to Prevent Condensation on your Lens:
Before entering an environment that is drastically different to the one you’re currently in – as in the above examples – make sure that your camera is securely in its case or camera bag, and that the zippers are fully closed. Most camera bags are pretty heavily padded to prevent damage to your equipment as a result of knocks and bumps, but this padding also has an added benefit of offering insulation to your equipment, keeping it warm. The sample applies to the camera on your smartphone: many waterproof or water resistant cases will provide the same protection. Allow your equipment to acclimatise to its new environment over minutes or hours depending on the severity of the difference in temperature. When you’re satisfied that it’s at or above the dew point temperature, you can take it out of the bag and be satisfied knowing there’s no risk of blurry lens due to water vapour forming.
How to Treat Condensation on a Camera Lens:
Prevention is simple, but it requires patience and is all too easy to forget. So if it’s too late and you already have some fogginess built up on your lens, here’s what you can do.

This traditional herbal remedy is nicknamed “bog rhubarb,” because it grows in damp, marshy areas. It was once used in Europe to treat the plague; today, it is used for seasonal allergies (such as hay fever), colds and flu, and asthma, as well as providing effective relief for migraines.
How Butterbur Works
Butterbur has natural antiallergenic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and mildly analgesic (pain-relieving) effects. It works by decreasing the secretion of histamine and leukotrienes by the immune cells, which are the main chemicals that the body releases during an allergic reaction to what it perceives as an invader such as pollen, dust, or animal dander. Butterbur is considered to be as effective as commonly available over-the-counter antihistamines for treating and controlling seasonal allergies such as hay fever. It acts to both mediate the allergic reaction and fight the inflammation in the upper respiratory tract, thereby alleviating allergy symptoms such as stuffy nose, sore throat, runny eyes, blocked ears, and sneezing, but without causing drowsiness. The active compounds it contains, called petasins, stop the inflammation associated with hay fever and may improve the efficacy of conventional inhalant preventive medications for asthma. Although evidence for the effectiveness of butterbur on allergies is small, many natural therapists and herbalists have found it useful for their patients.
Taken daily as a preventive, butterbur extract can bring relief to migraine sufferers, with clinical trials showing that it reduced the frequency, duration and intensity of migraine episodes. In one study published in Neurology, butterbur extract was found to be significantly more effective in reducing the frequency of migraines than placebo. It may also assist in relieving joint pain and menstrual cramps.
How to Use Butterbur
Butterbur is available in tablet or capsule form. Look for a product containing a standardized extract of petasins. Some manufacturers combine butterbur with other antiallergenic and anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as rosmarinic acid, nettle, quercetin or vitamin C, in formulas to prevent hay fever. Dosage depends on the potency of the product chosen. Follow label instructions or take as professionally prescribed. It is beneficial both as a treatment and a preventive for hay fever or seasonal allergies; if taking as a preventive, begin treatment around four to six weeks prior to the time when your symptoms usually first appear.
Safety First
Butterbur has not been widely tested during pregnancy or breastfeeding and so it is best avoided or used only under medical supervision during these periods. In rare instances, it may cause gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, rashes, itchy eyes or skin, or drowsiness. Note that the wild plant contains compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) that are toxic. However, standardized extracts used in herbal medicine are purified and often labelled “PA free.”

A team of neuroscientist from the National Institute on Aging in the United States, the Otto-von-Guericke University, and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, found that when cathepsin B was applied to brain cells, it spurred the production of molecules related to neurogenesis – the growth and development of nervous system tissue, including brain cells. The research team also produced evidence from the study that “cathepsin B is up-regulated in blood by exercise for three species–mice, Rhesus monkeys, and humans. Moreover, in humans who exercise consistently for four months, better performance on complex recall tasks, such as drawing from memory, is correlated with increased cathepsin B levels.” Other studies have found that cathepsin B is also neuro-protective and can clear amyloid plaques, which crate a sticky buildup on the outside of neurons and can be toxic to neurons in the brain.

Metl-Span, a manufacturer of insulated metal panels, hosted a grand opening ceremony for its new production facility in Hamilton, Ontario.
More than 150 guests came to celebrate the opening with Metl-Span. Guests came from across Canada and traveled from as far south as Texas to be in attendance. Many were able to see how Metl-Span insulated metal panels were produced for the first time on the guided plant tours.
The Metl-Span plant, located at 430 Sherman Avenue North, employs more than 20 full-time workers and is currently producing the Mesa, Light Mesa, Striated and Fluted profiles.
“With Metl-Span now operating in Canada, our customers here and in the northeastern and north central U.S. can benefit from lower delivery costs for all of their metal panel needs,” says Steve Zirkel, president of Metl-Span. “We are also very excited to be a part of the Hamilton community and provide job opportunities and business here.”
The ceremony included an official ribbon cutting with representatives from Metl-Span; the Hamilton Port Authority; NCI, Metl-Span’s parent company; and Robertson Building Systems, also an NCI company, invited to participate. The ribbon was cut by Metl-Span plant manager, Jeff Fountain.
Metl-Span started production in the 24,000-square-foot facility, located at the Port of Hamilton, in March.
“Customers will realize significant savings in terms of turnaround and delivery times,” Zirkel says. “In an industry where time literally means money, this advantage is tremendous.”
The new Hamilton production plant is currently producing Metl-Span Mesa, Light Mesa, Striated and Fluted insulated metal panels.
